This is a live jazz gig listings service from Jazz in Reading. We feature mostly modern jazz gigs happening within 20 miles or so of Reading.
The listings used to be published monthly, under the name 'Jazz Round About Reading', but all gigs now appear in the calendar, the link for which is below left. Check it out whenever you feel the urge to hear live jazz. Don't forget to refresh your browser each time you visit, to be sure of catching all latest changes or additions. Please check with venues before setting off - all details may be subject to change.
Musicians, promoters and venues should send their gig information to us via the Submit Your Gig form. Please note that the details you submit will be checked and edited before being approved for publication. Kirk Lightsey is a legend of the jazz piano. Deep roots, a feeling for the blues, and a richly developed sense of harmony characterise his playing. A new jointly led band formed in 2020 featuring some of the finest contemporary jazz bebop musicians in the UK, fronted by Greek saxophone phenomenon Vasilis Xenopoulos, with Steve Fishwick on trumpet and the golden touch of pianist Matyas Gayer. Added to this is virtuosic bassist Matyas Hofecker and rock-solid drummer Matt Home. The band’s vision is to carry on the lineage of groups like Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers as well as mirroring the New York contemporary-bop scene. From this inspiration, the band presents a sound that respects the tradition of the hard-bop era whilst also bringing it up to date for today’s audience. With an extensive repertoire of carefully crafted and imaginative original compositions, along with hip, swinging material by greats like Jimmy Heath, Cedar Walton and Horace Silver, Five-Way Split delivers a night of the best swinging and soulful music in town.
