Rising star Emily Masser is an astonishing vocalist, just 20 years of age and attending The Guildhall School of Music. Alex Clarke was a finalist at the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2020. Her hard-swinging, melodic approach is reminiscent of Scott Hamilton and Lester Young with bop influences of Phil Woods and Cannonball Adderley. With Rob Barron, the ultra-swinging drummer Steve Brown and Guildford Jazz’s Marianne Windham on bass.
Graeme Hewitt’s High Society Jazz Band | Theale
This date is going to be very special. Joining Graeme will be the incredible Ben Cummings on trumpet – Ben not only has a strange resemblance to Kenny Ball but for three years while Ken was in need of a bit of back-up, due to health issues, Ben supported him and his band during that time and acquired much of the Ball repertoire – which he brings to Theale. His last visit ended with a standing ovation, such was his contribution.
This next visit has an even greater attraction in that Ben is accompanied by his wife, Lizzie Newberry, herself a great entertainer, and the session is due to be a sell out. As a great friend of Graeme’s, Acker Bilk would say, “Stand by your bed with your boots in your hand – this is going to be special”

Jenny’s early influences as a jazz singer naturally include Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald but she has found inspiration from many other singers with current obsessions including Gregory Porter, China Moses and the wonderful Liane Carroll.
Jenny has been fortunate enough to be tutored by Liane Carroll and has learnt from her the importance of crafting a song to tell a story that touches hearts. More recently Jenny has studied under Emilia Mårtensson, a winner of the Jazz Vocalist of the Year in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards.

You’ve heard the original Radio Drama and seen the Play – now experience the Musical! OK, not exactly a musical – but read on…
In 1965, inspired by Dylan Thomas’ masterpiece, renowned pianist and composer Stan Tracey, ‘the godfather of British jazz’, composed Jazz Suite: Under Milk Wood – a beautifully constructed set of eight tunes, each with an unmistakably individual character, including the acknowledged genius of the tone-poem Starless and Bible Black.
Jazz in Reading – in collaboration with Progress Theatre – has arranged a performance of the work: Stan Tracey’s music interwoven with Dylan Thomas’ words. This is a rare opportunity to experience two musical and literary masterworks at their uplifting and life-affirming best.
“A friend of mine has attended every presentation of this performance to date having attended the previous five at Goring, Oxford, Marlow, Bracknell and Reading. He finds new treasures to enjoy on each occasion. So will you. This is not to be missed.” – Trevor Bannister
