‘Expansions’ is the latest band led by Gabriel Garrick who took up the trumpet aged seven, started his own jazz trio at school as a teenager, worked with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra while attending the Royal Academy of Music jazz course – and hasn’t looked back since.
Expansions has been described as an all-embracing vehicle of musical expression, with a deliberately eclectic repertoire. It starts from the accessible ‘jazz standards’ end of things but includes original compositions from both Gabriel and his late father, the British jazz giant Michael Garrick. Key elements of this fresh new quintet are good time, good feel, adherence to melodic clarity and the application of sympathetic creative integrity.
When not playing at Ronnie Scott’s or other venues across the world with the likes of Arturo Sandoval, Cleo Laine, Nigel Kennedy, Digby Fairweather or Alan Barnes, Gabriel follows his passion for jazz education, including directing the Jazz Academy holiday courses founded by his father.
The other members of Expansions have similarly stellar credentials: Terry Collie is a composer and educator and the co-founder and director of the TW12 Jazz Festival; Nigel Price was placed third in the 2014 British Jazz Awards for ‘best guitarist’ and is also a regular at Ronnie Scott’s, where he has played over 400 times; Dave Jones is hailed by the Global Music Network as one of the UK’s most gifted jazz composers/bass players; and Paul Cavaciuti is an internationally renowned performer, composer, educator and music therapist. | Buy tickets
