Born in Edinburgh, saxophonist Jo Fooks was named ‘Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year’ in 1992, which led to study at the Guildhall and a scholarship to Berklee School of Music’s summer jazz program. She joined the Humphrey Lyttelton band, touring all over the UK. Her influences include Illinois Jacquet, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon & Cannonball Adderley. Jo’s big, bright sound has also been compared to Stan Getz. She has worked with some of the finest mainstream bands and artists, including Jo Harrop & Scott Hamilton. With John Pearce on piano, Buster Birch on drums and Marianne Windham on double bass for a night of classic, swinging standards and a few of her originals.

Dele Sosimi has been at the heart of the global Afrobeat scene December 1995. His blend of complex funk grooves, traditional Nigerian music, African percussion and an underlying sense of jazz combines with his virtuoso keyboard skills and rhythmic singing to make him one of the most respected Afrobeat authorities of his era. London’s Jazz Café has said “we’re honored that for so long we’ve been able to call Jazz Café the home of Dele’s seminal afrobeat orchestra. “The love and passion I have for composing, writing, performing and teaching Afrobeat Music is my main motivation,” says Dele, adding; “my aim is to build upon the rich heritage of music worldwide by creating opportunities for young people to learn.”

Sensational Danish-born singer Sara Oschlag and Pete Long, Director of the Ronnie Scott’s Big Band pay tribute to the 1957 recording session “Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Duke Ellington Songbook”, arranged by Billy Strayhorn. Sara is an effortlessly hip, intelligent interpreter of songs in the jazz tradition, her vocal influences include Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter, Anita O’Day, Shirley Horn, Cecile McLorin Salvant, and of course Ella Fitzgerald. The music is stunning, the band is swinging, and we wholeheartedly advise you to get a ticket while they are available! Since their start in 2007 they have played in quartet, quintet and sextet formations. For this event at Progress it will be a quintet with guest pianist Will Barry.
